It was in the early 20th-century renaissance of the decorative arts that modern graphic design was born, art made to serve the global expansion of business and industry.

Alain Weill traces the history of commercial imagemaking and typography in Europe and the United States, from the earliest poster artists to the radical avant-garde influences of Dada and Constructivism, De Stijl and the Bauhaus, from the political and social consciousness of the 1960s to the digital age.

With an extremely readable text, hundreds of colour illustrations and additional documents by distinguished authors on ‘Early Writings on Graphic Design’, ‘Advertising: The Mother of Graphic Design’ and ‘The Future of Graphic Design?’, this is a treasure trove for students and practising artists and designers.

In the last five years a new wave of designers have put Scandinavia at the forefront of graphic design. Their prolific output, especially on the web, has influenced designers and design audiences worldwide. Many are now working abroad in cities such as London and New York. Scandinavian designers are producing cult sites, for example the Danish k10k.com (designed by Toke Nygaard and Michael Schmidt) and Swedish collective Acne’s online gaming community netbabyworld.com. At the other end of the scale is Norwegian illustrator Kim Hiorthoy, an important and original new voice in graphic design whose work is distinguished by its seeming rejection of the perfection of digital design in favour of painting, collage and photography. Through a sequence of varied work, 55[degrees] North reveals what contemporary Scandinavian graphic design is, who produces it, where they live, which media they use, and what influences them in their work.

As modern media develop digital forms, be they computer screens, telephone or TV screens, the way in which information is set out can no longer be transferred directly from a paper support. The size, shape, brightness, colour and duration of any image all have a fundamental influence not only on how information is presented, but how well the viewer receives it. This is the first book to deal specifically with layouts for screen-based visual media. Combining explicative visualizations with informative text and examples, this book will set the guidelines for both students and professionals alike.

How To Identify Prints by Bamber Gascoigne,
Publisher: Thames & Hudson
Publish date: May 24, 2004
Number of pages: 216 pages
ISBN: 0500284806
ISBN13: 9780500284803

Pret : 60 Lei

Since its first publication in 1986, this comprehensive guide has established itself as the essential reference book for print and book collectors, dealers in prints and illustrated books, art librarians, art professors and students, and everyone interested in graphic art.

Is a particular print a woodcut, an etching, or a lithograph? Is it an original stipple engraving or a photogravure reproduction? Is the color printed or added by hand? Arranged in self-contained sections that can be consulted individually or as part of a larger research operation, this book helps identify accurately any printed image. Included are all the manual methods and also the mechanical processes that constitute the vast majority of printed images around us. In all, some ninety different techniques are described, both monochrome and color.

Essential aspects of printing history and the printmaking craft receive full coverage, and examples are given of the features that reveal the type of print, such as varieties of line and tone. Of particular interest are the many illustrations of enlarged details showing the different appearance of various techniques under strong magnification.

The one great change during the past twenty years has been the high-quality inkjet and laser prints that are now part of everyday life. How can one tell whether an attractive image is valuable in its own right or merely an appealing reproduction? As cheap printing becomes more sophisticated, it inevitably becomes harder to identify correctly an image of this kind. Bamber Gascoigne’s new observations in this area, added for this revised edition, will prove invaluable. 275 illustrations, 40 in color.

Reviews

‘This is such a fundamentally important book that no one interested in prints should be without it’ - Printmaking Today

The world of music has often been where today’s designer superstars have forged their graphic design language. From jazz cover art to club flyers, from CD-packaging to fly posters, the culture of music offers unlimited possibilities for visual experimentation. Sonic Graphics / Seeing Sound not only showcases this rich genre, but is the first book to get to the heart of the relationship between music and its successful graphic expression. Exemplary work from studios around the world is presented in three sections: Notation analyses the use of sign and symbol systems in creating identity and branding for music artists, recording projects and performances; Material considers how products can package the intrinsic nature of the music they contain; and Atmosphere looks at how space and multidimensional environments can be used to visualize sound. A reference section includes studio websites and a glossary.
