This volume originates in an international colloquium held in the British Museum in 1998. It comprises 18 papers, written by leading scholars, each of whom explores an aspect of the use and exploitation of the deserts lying to the east and west of the Nile Valley by the ancient Egyptians and their prehistoric ancestors. Exploding the myth that Egypt was simply the “Gift of the Nile”, it aims to create an understanding of how the Egyptians perceived and exploited their wider environment.

In this lavish companion to the BBC series “Earth: The Power of the Planet”, renowned science writers Iain Stewart and John Lynch use stunning imagery and the latest scientific discoveries to explain how our remarkable planet functions. Earth has survived four and a half billion years of being ’stirred from below and bombarded from above’ but at the start of the twenty-first century our planet faces new threats, brought about by human actions. It is the perfect time to look back on an extraordinary life and give Earth a thorough health-check. Each chapter focuses on one of Earth’s most powerful forces - meteor impacts, plate tectonics, the ocean, atmosphere and ice - and explores their central role in keeping Earth alive. These are the forces that drive our planet and shape its destiny. We discover how a devastating cosmic impact blasted a huge chunk of Earth into space to form the Moon, how Earth nearly froze to death when it was completely encased in ice for millions of years, and how Earth’s remarkable heat engine, its molten core, saved the day. Earth has been able to sustain complex life thanks to an extraordinary number of lucky breaks and coincidences. Scientists predict that one day it will die as the Sun heats up and expands. But are we hastening its end through our actions? This lavishly illustrated book will tell the epic story of the birth, life and future of our amazing planet.

The Chilling Stars: The New Theory Of Climate Change by Henrik Svensmark,

Scientists agree that over the last century the earth has become warmer. But do we really know why this has happened? A deftly written and enjoyable read, “The Chilling Stars” outlines a brilliant, daring and undoubtedly controversial new theory that will provoke fresh thinking about global warming. As prize-winning science writer, Nigel Calder and climate physicist Henrik Svensmark explain, an interplay of the clouds, the Sun and cosmic rays - sub-atomic particles from exploded stars - seems to have more effect on the climate than manmade carbon dioxide.
This conclusion stems from Svensmark’s research at the Danish National Space Center which has recently shown that cosmic rays play an unsuspected role in making our everyday clouds. And during the last 100 years cosmic rays became scarcer because unusually vigorous action by the Sun batted many of them away. Fewer cosmic rays meant fewer clouds and a warmer world.
The theory, simply put here but explained in fascinating detail in the book, emerges at a time of intense public and political concern about climate change. Motivated only by their concern that science must be trustworthy, Svensmark and Calder invite their readers to put aside their preconceptions about manmade global warming and look afresh at the role of Nature in this hottest of world issues.

With its subtle light illuminating the night sky, the Moon has always been an object of fascination, from its phoenixlike cycle of birth and death to its association with the female body and fertility. Jules Cashford explores the myths, symbols, and poetic images of the Moon throughout history, starting from early Paleolithic markings on horn and bone, up to present-day poetry. This captivating book traces our customs and secular events back to their sacred lunar source explaining how we have evolved to think in some of the ways that we do and why. Accompanied by 175 beautiful illustrations, The Moon investigates how the lunar image helped shape our mind, and more importantly, it examines what these myths and images tell us about our own consciousness. This is the most comprehensive and in-depth look at the moon and its vast influence on the structure and function of mythology, religion, and consciousness.

The Islands Of Ireland by Nutan.,

A beautifully photographed, revelatory tour of nearly twenty of Ireland’s remotest Islands, by leading Irish photojournalist Nutan.
Ireland has long been renowned for its beautiful countryside, but modern Ireland is in the midst of an economic and urban boom, and the peaceful, rural, old-fashioned country lives more in the imagination than in reality. The traditional Ireland, however, can still be found in its many sparsely inhabited islands.
The Irish photojournalist Nutan sailed from island to island, meeting the inhabitants, capturing the special light, recording the distinctive landscapes that are undeveloped and still relatively free of tourism. The craggy splendour of the magnificent scenery, the jagged rocks, strong currents and mercurial winds lend a magical dimension to these places.
Protected by a capricious climate and an inhospitable sea, each of the more than twenty islands celebrated here possesses a history and a beauty all its own.

Who Built The Moon? by Alan Butler,

The Moon has confounded scientists for many years. It does not obey the known rules of astrophysics and there is no coherent theory of its origin - in fact, it should not really be there. When researching the ancient Stone Age system of geometry and measurement, which they revealed in their previous book, Civilization One, the authors were surprised to discover that the system also works perfectly on the Moon. On further investigation, they found a consistent sequence of beautiful integer numbers when looking at every major aspect of the Moon, while no pattern emerges for any other planet or moon in our solar system. For example, the Moon revolves at exactly one hundredth of the speed that the Earth turns on its axis; moreover, the Moon is exactly 400 times smaller than the Sun and 400 times closer to the Earth. They also discovered that the Moon possess little or no heavy metals and has no core. In fact, many specialist suspect that the Moon is hollow, which should not be possible. If our Moon did not exist…nor would we. Higher life only developed on Earth because the Moon is exactly what it is and where it is. Whern all of the facts are dispassionately reviewed, it becomes unreasonable to cling to the idea that the Moon is a natural object. The only question that remains is, “Who built it”?
