This is the first biography of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh - both royal, both great-great-grandchildren of Queen Victoria, but, in temperament and upbringing, two very different people. The Queen’s childhood was loving and secure, the Duke’s was turbulent: his grandfather assassinated, his father arrested, his family exiled, his parents separated when he was only ten. Elizabeth and Philip met as cousins in the 1930s. They married in 1947, aged twenty-one and twenty-six. A little more than four years later, they were Queen and consort. For almost sixty years theirs have been among the most famous faces in the world - yet the personalities behind the image remain elusive and the nature of their marriage is an enigma. Philip & Elizabeth tells the extraordinary story of these two contrasting lives, assesses their achievement, together and apart, and explores the nature of their relationships, with one another and with their children. Here is a unique royal biography: the author has met all the principal players in the story; he quotes no anonymous sources; he has had privileged access to the Queen; he has known the Duke of Edinburgh over twenty-five years and has interviewed him. This is a powerful and revealing portrait of a remarkable partnership, told with authority and unique insight, and illustrated with Prince Philip’s family photographs and pictures from the Queen’s royal collection.

In the last millennium there have been only six female sovereigns: Mary I and Elizabeth I, Mary II and Anne, Victoria and Elizabeth II, who celebrated her eightieth birthday in 2006. With the exception of Mary I, they are among our most successful monarchs. Without Mary II and Anne, the Glorious Revolution of 1688 might not have taken place. Elizabeth I and Victoria gave their name to an age, presiding over long periods when the country made significant progress in the growth of empire, prestige and power. All of them have far-reaching legacies. Each faced personal sacrifices and emotional dilemmas in her pursuit of political power. How to overcome the problem of being a female ruler when the sex was considered inferior? Does a queen take a husband and, if so, how does she reconcile the reversal of the natural order, according to which the man should be the master? A queen’s first duty is to provide an heir to the throne, but at what cost? In this richly compelling narrative, Maureen Waller delves into the intimate lives of England’s queens regnant in delicious detail, assessing their achievements from a female perspective.

When Valentino Rossi dedicated his 2005 World Championship win to Barry Sheene, it was a fitting memorial to the man who perhaps more than any other made motorcycling the hugely successful sport it is today. Sadly, he died of cancer in 2003, only aged 52. Barry Sheene won the British motorcycling 125cc championship at the age of twenty and twice became World Champion in the 500cc class, despite two life-threatening crashes, both of which he overcame with great courage and determination. BARRY is an intimate and revealing account told by three people who knew him better than most. Steve Parrish, fellow bike racer and now BBC commentator, admits that Barry completely changed his life, and reveals just what he got up to with his ‘partner in crime’…Nick Harris, one of Barry’s greatest fans, wrote and broadcast on all his major successes, and ended up by working alongside Barry as a television commentator. Barry’s widow, Stephanie, has collaborated fully and written a foreword. She reveals Barry’s great insecurity, their family life and his long and brave fight against cancer.

The minutes and hours following the 11th September terror attacks on the World Trade Center posed the greatest challenge to governance in New York City’s history. Mayor Rudoph Giuliani had barely escaped with his life in the collapse of the first tower. Fires burned furiously near the site as the other buildings verged on collapse and Air Force fighter jets criss-crossed the sky to ward off other attacks. Yet in those moments after the calamity, and in the following days and months, Mayor Giuliani not only steered the city through the crisis, but did so with an assurance and authority that was hailed around the world as a model of courageous leadership. In this book, Giuliani describes vividly the chaos and horror of the twin towers catastrophe, and explains how the rules of management he enforced as Mayor enabled him to gain control of the emergency. These are also the rules, Giuliani makes clear, that anyone in a leadership position - from the head of a large corporation to the owner of a corner shop - can use to inspire others and achieve concrete results.

Karol Wojtyla’s early life experiences were of intense love and intense loss: born in Poland in 1920, he was eight when his mother died, twelve when his older brother died of scarlet fever in the hospital where he worked as a doctor, and twenty when his severe but loving father died during the Nazi occupation. God and the Catholic Church were from the beginning his consolation and strength. What is new and unusual about this timely biography is the attention the author gives to the inner man.Garry O’Connor has not only investigated Karol Wojtyla’s life before he became pope, his love of football, skiing and the outdoor life, his commitment to acting, his friendships with men and with women, his experiences under German then Soviet occupation, his nationalism, his early years as a priest, but has also subtly analysed the pope’s own poems, plays and philosophical works as clues to what made him tick.

The result is a living portrait, vivid and accessible, based on scrupulous research that dramatically tracks the personal tragedies, including the assassination attempt in 1981, and the great public confrontations on the world stage.

Eminem’s rise to stardom was far from easy. After being born in Kansas City and travelling back and forth between KC and the Detroit metropolitan area, Eminem and his mother moved into the Eastside of Detroit when he was 12. Switching schools every two to three months made it difficult to make friends, graduate and to stay out of trouble.

Rap, however, became Eminem’s solace. Battling schoolmates in the lunchroom brought joy to what was otherwise a painful existence. Although he would later drop out of school and land several minimum-wage-paying, full-time jobs, his musical focus remained constant.

Eminem released his debut album, “Infinite”, in 1996, but after being thoroughly disappointed and hurt by the response it received, Eminem began working on what would later become the “Slim Shady” EP - a project he made for himself. Featuring several scathing lines about local music industry personalities as well as devious rants about life in general, the set quickly caught the ear of hip-hop’s difficult-to-please underground. By presenting himself as himself, Eminem and his career took off.

Soon after giving the Rap Coalition’s Wendy Day a copy of the “Infinite” album at a chance meeting, she helped the aspiring lyrical gymnast secure a spot at the Coalition’s 1997 Rap Olympics in Los Angeles, where he won second place in the freestyle competition. During the trip, Eminem and his manager, Paul Rosenberg, gave a few people from Interscope Records his demo and he made his major radio debut on the world famous “Wake Up Show” with Sway and Tech. Realizing that this was the opportunity of his lifetime, Eminem delivered a furious medley of lyrics that wowed his hosts and radio audience alike.
