Karol Wojtyla’s early life experiences were of intense love and intense loss: born in Poland in 1920, he was eight when his mother died, twelve when his older brother died of scarlet fever in the hospital where he worked as a doctor, and twenty when his severe but loving father died during the Nazi occupation. God and the Catholic Church were from the beginning his consolation and strength. What is new and unusual about this timely biography is the attention the author gives to the inner man.Garry O’Connor has not only investigated Karol Wojtyla’s life before he became pope, his love of football, skiing and the outdoor life, his commitment to acting, his friendships with men and with women, his experiences under German then Soviet occupation, his nationalism, his early years as a priest, but has also subtly analysed the pope’s own poems, plays and philosophical works as clues to what made him tick.
The result is a living portrait, vivid and accessible, based on scrupulous research that dramatically tracks the personal tragedies, including the assassination attempt in 1981, and the great public confrontations on the world stage.

Eminem’s rise to stardom was far from easy. After being born in Kansas City and travelling back and forth between KC and the Detroit metropolitan area, Eminem and his mother moved into the Eastside of Detroit when he was 12. Switching schools every two to three months made it difficult to make friends, graduate and to stay out of trouble.
Rap, however, became Eminem’s solace. Battling schoolmates in the lunchroom brought joy to what was otherwise a painful existence. Although he would later drop out of school and land several minimum-wage-paying, full-time jobs, his musical focus remained constant.
Eminem released his debut album, “Infinite”, in 1996, but after being thoroughly disappointed and hurt by the response it received, Eminem began working on what would later become the “Slim Shady” EP - a project he made for himself. Featuring several scathing lines about local music industry personalities as well as devious rants about life in general, the set quickly caught the ear of hip-hop’s difficult-to-please underground. By presenting himself as himself, Eminem and his career took off.
Soon after giving the Rap Coalition’s Wendy Day a copy of the “Infinite” album at a chance meeting, she helped the aspiring lyrical gymnast secure a spot at the Coalition’s 1997 Rap Olympics in Los Angeles, where he won second place in the freestyle competition. During the trip, Eminem and his manager, Paul Rosenberg, gave a few people from Interscope Records his demo and he made his major radio debut on the world famous “Wake Up Show” with Sway and Tech. Realizing that this was the opportunity of his lifetime, Eminem delivered a furious medley of lyrics that wowed his hosts and radio audience alike.

Not for a generation, since the late Anthony Burgess’s SHAKESPEARE (1970), has there been anything approaching a popular, mainstream biography of the greatest and most celebrated writer the world has known. Yet Shakespeare’s life was as colourful, varied and dramatic as his works: the Warwickshire country boy who ‘disappeared’ for seven years before fetching up in London as an apprentice actor…whose fellow players could scarcely keep up with the plays he turned out for them…who rapidly became a favourite at the court of Elizabeth I…and returned to Stratford a prosperous ‘gentleman’, proud to realise his father’s dream of a family coat of arms, before his death at 52. 1999 saw the completion of London’s biggest new tourist attraction: an international Shakespeare Exhibition Centre alongside the rebuilt Globe Theatre and this splendidly illustrated biography of the greatest of all dramatists and poets will be a highly desirable commemorative volume.

An in-depth study of the life of one of Hollywood’s great leading men: actor, superstar, philanthropist, model husband, world-class racing driver, and authentic silver-screen icon - the man behind blue eyes. Paul Newman’s best-known films, including “The Hustler”, “Cool Hand Luke”, “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”, and “The Sting”, are cherished both by movie lovers and within the wider culture. Daniel O’Brien now explores the lineage of Newman’s life. His father did not approve of his son’s acting ambitions, but Newman forged on regardless, graduated from New York’s fabled Actors Studio, and made his name. He was startlingly handsome, but also bravely venturesome in his acting choices. He made a stunningly successful marriage with Joanne Woodward, but lost a son in tragic circumstances, and embraced political activism and good causes in later life. In the mid- 1980s, he enjoyed a remarkable double-Oscar-winning success, consolidating his status as one of the last and greatest living links between Hollywood’s golden age and its post-studio-system era.

By the time of her death in 2003 at the age of ninety-six, Katharine Hepburn had long been an American institution. The following year, Cate Blanchett’s striking depiction of Hepburn’s eccentricity in “The Aviator” reminded audiences of the sheer complexity of the woman. William Mann charts the journey by which Kathy Hepburn of Hartford, Connecticut, became the star known simply as ‘Kate’, dazzling audiences for fifty years in the company of such luminaries as Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, and, most memorably, Spencer Tracy, with whom she made nine movies and conducted a long off-screen romance. Hepburn won her fourth Oscar aged seventy-four and made her swansong movie at eighty-seven. Across seventy years in the public eye, she was a cut above the usual screen queen. Now William Mann looks beyond the legend to consider apart the life and the persona of Katharine Hepburn, from her movies, her loves, her bisexuality and her extraordinary life in the golden age of film-making.
